After Lake Alamosa drained the remaining lakebed was blown into the northeast corner of the San Luis Valley forming the Great Sand Dunes. The smaller, nutrient rich, silt particles made it over the mountains where they would be deposited in the now famously rich farmlands of the American Midwest.
